AT SANTA MONICA MUNI airport, Jordan and Chris waited in the executive lounge of the private air charter terminal for the Gulfstream G450 to be prepped and fueled for their departure to Missoula, Montana.

Chris stared out the lounge window, watching as the jet’s ground crew completed their external inspection of the aircraft. Beyond the window, the jet’s engines whined softly as the plane idled on the tarmac.

Jordan returned from the guest services bar, a steaming beverage in each hand. She offered one to Chris. “As requested,” she said. “Coffee, with four creams and four sugars.”

Chris accepted the hot beverage. “Perfect. Thanks, J.”

Jordan stared at her partner. “How in the world can you possibly drink that?”

“Drink what?”

“That.”

Chris stared at the cup in his hand. “It’s just coffee.”

“Not anymore,” Jordan teased. “With all the cream and sugar I put in there it’s practically a candy bar now.”

“It’s just the way I like it,” Chris replied. “And for the record, do you hear me criticizing your taste in pick-me-ups?”

“That’s not a pick-me-up. That’s an artery clogger.”

“Oh really? And just what are you drinking?”

“Herbal tea. No cream, no sugar. Just a half teaspoon of honey.”

“That’s gross.”

“What’s gross about herbal tea?”

“It tastes like weeds.”

“No, it doesn’t.”

“Oh yeah? What’s that one made from?”

“Dandelion.”

“I rest my case. A dandelion is a weed. Ergo, you are drinking weed tea.”

“It’s not the same thing at all,” Jordan argued. “Do you have any idea how this is made?”

“I don’t really care. But I’m pretty sure you’re going to tell me.”

“For starters, I’m very familiar with this brand. This is one hundred percent organically grown. It contains real dandelion root and nothing else. No bitterness whatsoever. Just a slightly nutty, earthy taste.”

“Allow me to point out the salient points in that statement. Real dandelion root. Earthy taste. In other words, a weed.”

Jordan smiled. “You’re impossible.”

“How much did you pay for that?”

“Six dollars.”

“Six bucks? You’re out of your mind.”

“Why? I like it.”

“Tell you what. Before your groundskeeper cuts the lawn next time, send the kids outside with a plastic bag and tell them to pull up every dandelion they can find. Pay them a quarter apiece. You’ll have enough to make your tea, plus you’ll save yourself six bucks.”

Jordan laughed. “Very funny.”

“I’m serious.”

“I’m sure you are.”

“And one more thing.”

“What?”

“Quit picking on me for how I take my coffee.”

Jordan grinned. “I have only your cardiovascular health at heart.”

“If that’s the case, I forgive you.”

“I’d hate to see it catch up to and kill you one day. Good partners are hard to find.”

“How benevolent of you.”

“I thought so.” Jordan’s phone began to ring. She removed it from her purse, checked the screen. The display read UNKNOWN CALLER. She took the call. “Jordan Quest speaking.”

The line was silent.

“Hello?” Jordan asked.

No reply.

“Who’s calling, please?” she asked.

After a few seconds, the caller spoke. “Is this Special Agent Quest?”

“Yes,” Jordan replied. “To whom am I speaking?”

“My name is Elena Pintaro,” the caller said. “I need your help.”
